Once I arrived in Washington, I picked up my rental car, missed a turn and added 18 miles to the half-mile drive from the airport to the hotel. After checking in and unpacking, I headed out to scout the route to the venue (American University) and grab a bite to eat. Dinner was a great calzone at an Italian eatery staffed by girls with Russian accents on Connecticut Ave.
It was almost 9 by the time I finished dinner and I was tired after getting up at 4:30 a.m. and flying all day, but I decided to trade an hour of sleep for a bit of sightseeing somewhere between the restaurant and my hotel. Looking at the map I noted that Connecticut Ave. pointed almost directly at the White House, so that’s where I went. I walked around the building, over to the Washington Monument and back to the car.
Back at the hotel I showered and went to bed ready for my 5:30 a.m. wake up call.
