We had the opportunity to explore the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve (part of the Coachella Valley Preserve system) on our visit to Palm Desert last Christmas. The oasis is fed by water seeping through the famous San Andreas fault. I’d never seen a grove of palm trees before, and this made me appreciate them as a significant player in a natural ecosystem instead of just an ornamental exotic plant. The oasis itself was relatively cool, but outside the trees the desert air was warm enough, even in late December.

Well done. A favorite place for an easy hike.
